Week 12: Five Minute Challenge – Calgon, take me away!

Oh sweet sweet vacation. How I’ve been looking forward to you!

This year our family took a break from our traditional OBX vacation and headed to Deep Creek, MD.   Let me tell you how awesome it was.  0% humidity, 30 degrees cooler than home and TONS to do!  We enjoyed zip cording, white water rafting, tubing, horseback riding and time in the pool.  Evie showed off her new swim skills (shout out to MarTar Swim School) and had no fear when it came to any new adventure, including a roller coaster!

These are some of my favorite shots from the trip.  My dear friend Morgan from Morgan Burks Photography gets credit for the AMAZING edit on the horse photo I took.  She makes, in my humble opinion, the BEST photoshop actions for photographers . Check her out at:

So enjoy the pictures and perhaps if you close your eyes for a bit, you can take a little vacation in your mind 🙂

Until next time,

Sarah

Awaiting Juliana: Bump and Beyond

Meet Samantha. A seriously stunning momma-to-be, awaiting her little girl Juliana. Sam’s session was right up my alley. She totally embraced her gorgeous pregnant form and was game for anything. If someone promised me I’d look that good pregnant, perhaps I’d consider giving it another go.

So Sam was slated to deliver Juliana in time to visit the studio before my vacation. Juliana was good and comfy in utero and arrived a week past her due date. She’s every bit as gorgeous as her Momma and it’s crazy to believe Sam delivered her just 10 days ago.  Knowing that Sam was a girly girl, I had so much fun working on styling for Juliana’s session.  I got a beautiful crystal silk bow tieback from @my darling emma and an adorable lace crown from @hoolovesyoubaby.  Then, since she was born in July, I had to do a watermelon set up.  Green was definitely her color!  Sam’s Mom sent some feathered angel wings that looked positively angelic.  And lastly, the precious family shot.  True story: sometimes I cry when I edit these family shots.   It’s just so beautiful to see the interactions between these new parents and the babies they’ve been waiting to meet.  Best.job.ever.

Maternity Sessions: Making Pregnancy Glamorous!

I wanted to call this post “Hot Mommas” but I was worried what type of audience that would draw. 🙂 That being said, all of these women are indeed, HOT MOMMAS.

Let’s talk about pregnancy. The time when you’re far heavier than your normal weight and perhaps wondering where the glow is that you were promised. I skipped the glow and instead got bacne. LOVELY. But you know what, I booked a maternity session with my good friends Erin and Corey of SnappShot Photography, got my butt into a techno thumping seat at MAC, slapped on some killer fake lashes and worked that bump like my name was Demi Moore.

Ladies, pregnancy is as beautiful as you make it. And for me, it was a one time thing so I’m so glad that I got over my insecurities and booked a session that produced photos that I absolutely treasure. We’re all our own harshest critics but I defy you to send me a client who doesn’t walk away feeling beautiful. It’s kind of my gift to society. You’re welcome 🙂

Just ask Krystal, the client who started it all for me. From her sleek ponytail to her sparkly Toms, she shined!

Or Jaime who rocked that blinged out belly band like it was the new hot fashion item

Or Julie who showed her Baltimore pride and just how connected she and her husband are.  Belly laughs people.   LOVE IT!

Or Shannon whose infamous bump now graces the walls of Hoffman OBGYN practices.  I call her my Calvin Klien model!

Or Rebecca who seriously should consider a career in modeling.  She made 1000 facial expressions in the course of a minute.

Then came Katie with the most gorgeous hair I’ve ever seen.   Pregnant with her third boy, she actually did 2 maternity sessions so she could incorporate her 2 boys and her hubby.   Clearly she cherishes these moments spent building a family!

And lastly, Suzanne.  Oh Suzanne.  You stole all the pregnancy glow that I was waiting for.  Positively radiant and clearly crazy in love with the experience.   Looking at your pictures makes me feel jubilant!

So ladies, don’t sweat the bacne or the stretch marks or whatever is holding you back from capturing these moments.   You’ll be sad you didn’t do this.   Call me Justin Timberlake:  I’m bringing sexy back.  And I’m making pregnancy chic.  And all the cool kids are doing it.

Nuff said.

Week 11: 5 Minute Challenge – Scouting Locations

Every week when I drive Evie to swim lessons I pass this old abandoned house with a big barn. The field is kind of overgrown but in an intriguing way. It’s always been a place I wanted to photograph Evie and last week we finally made time. Now…I must admit…this shoot took longer than 5 minutes. Quite a bit longer. Airplanes fly right above this property and Evie and I had fun watching them. Plus I promised her a Wendy’s frostee for her help so she was motivated to shoot some extra frames. I can’t get over how grown she looks. I’m pretty certain some of these looks will transfer into the teenage years when my mere existence pains her. What a kid. So little and so big all at once.

P.S. If you look really closely at the sunflare in the final shot, you can almost see a heart over her upper chest area!

MJ: Growing Up Gal

MJ holds a very special place in my heart. Not only does she belong to my best bud from high school, she was the VERY FIRST newborn I ever photographed (check out the post here: https://evieclairephotography.wordpress.com/2012/12/29/not-a-creature-was-stirring-not-even-a-mouse/). My work has grown so much in the last 5 months and so has she! Seriously, dear does not even begin to adequately describe her! She full of sweet smiles and I almost died laughing over the collage of varied facial expressions. Super animated!

MJ’s Momma is a teacher and school librarian so we incorporated a Very Hungry Caterpillar theme for some of the shots. The adorable hat and banner were made by Liesl and Me. Check out her facebook page for more information:
https://www.facebook.com/LieslAndMe
And of course we had to work in a cow theme because it matches her nursery 🙂

In the blink of an eye she’ll be a year and I can’t wait to capture those precious moments for her!

Little Man Music: 6 Months and Growing!

Stevie is one of my very special grown with me babies. He’s the first baby that I captured before and after birth. See Krystal’s maternity blog post here:
https://evieclairephotography.wordpress.com/2012/12/05/momma-in-the-making/
and Stevie’s newborn blog post here:
https://evieclairephotography.wordpress.com/2013/01/27/little-man-music/

So Krystal and I have been eagerly planning Stevie’s 6 month shoot from styling to backdrops. Of course we knew we had to include the same piano from his newborn session to show just how much he’s grown. And indeed, my oh my has he grown. A big beautiful smile, the new ability to sit without support and a desire to work on standing. We had so much fun that he returned 2 days later after I received a new backdrop shipment to be the first to model my new stars and superhero backdrops.

Can’t wait to see what this little man music is doing in another 6 months. Epic!

Week 10: 5 Minute Challenge – The grass is always greener

Recently I asked my favorite vendor, Ginger of A Piece of the Plan, to create a special bonnet for Evie. Ginger hand embroidered this amazing bonnet for Evie and added beautiful silk ties. It was everything I envisioned and more.

After spending quite some time designing the bonnet with Ginger, I started to think about how I wanted to photograph it. I had this vision of Evie in a tall corn field, peeking out of the corn hide and seek style. I called my brother, who lives in the country, to ask how tall the corn was. 3-4 feet he replied. PERFECT.

So the day of the shoot came and we drove an hour to said corn field, only to find there was no corn at all. Punked by my brother. I’m 31 and still getting punked by my little brother. Even Evie looks miffed in the photos!

2013-06-09_0073.jpg

Fast forward a few weeks and we made another trip to the country. I packed the bonnet and a simple white dress just in case I was inspired to try again. What happened was magic. A beautiful field, rolling hills in the background, a cooperative toddler (AMAZING in and of itself!) and just 2 minutes to shoot before a downpour. The end result is far better than anything I could ever imagine and I feel I did Ginger’s bonnet justice.

Seeing these images almost makes me wish we lived in the country where I feel like I’m surrounded by all the glory Mother Nature can dish out. But as they say, the grass is always greener on the other side of the fence.
